A really amazing thing happened last Wednesday. My family & I were invited to a rededication service for my Great Great Uncle, Private Charles Ernest Lane in Northern France.Charles died on 2nd November 1918, just 9 days before the end of WW1 and 23 days before his daughter’s second birthday. His body was never identified and his name has only ever been listed on a memorial of lost soldiers in Vis-En-Artois.I received an official letter out of the blue, about a month ago from The Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (part of the Ministry of Defence) saying that they had discovered that an unnamed grave in Auberchicourt British Cemetery is actually him.On Wednesday a new headstone, bearing his name, was unveiled. It was a huge honour to be there representing our family and reflecting on the huge tragedy my ancestors must of felt.Possibly the most poignant thing about the new headstone is that as a family we were allowed to choose an inscription to write on the bottom of the gravestone. The inscription had to be in keeping to the era in which he died, no modern song lyrics, poems or anything that referenced anything post 1918. I remembered a small card that my Auntie showed me, tucked within an old box of photographs. A tiny card sent by my family at the time of Charles’ death to commemorate him. It featured a short, carefully chosen poem. So we choose two lines from this poem as the tribute and feel proud that it would have been exactly what Agnes, his widow, would have choosen too.I recreated an exact copy of the card to tie on the flowers we placed on his grave. This currently sits in the cemetery alongside wreaths from The Royal Yorkshire Regiment, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the British Legion and the York and Lancaster Regimental Association.We were totally blown away by the care & attention that the JCCC took in tracking us down and the way the @commonwealthwargraves take such great care of all the fallen.Thanks to my brother-in-law David for many of these photos. So wonderful to capture such great memories of our special day.#lestweforget
